UAE
Visa & Residency
COUNTRY FILEEmployment visa (most common) is sponsored by your employer. Freelance permits are available through various free zones (DMCC, JAFZA, Meydan, etc.) — costs range from AED 7,500-15,000/year. The Golden Visa provides 5-10 year residency for investors ($136,000+ property), entrepreneurs, specialized talents, and exceptional students. Remote Work Visa (1 year) requires proof of employment with a foreign company and minimum $3,500/month salary. All visas provide access to Emirates ID, which is needed for everything (banking, phone contracts, etc.). Visa processing is typically fast — 1-3 weeks.
Tax System
COUNTRY FILEZero personal income tax — this is the UAE's primary attraction for high earners. Corporate tax of 9% was introduced in 2023 on profits exceeding AED 375,000, but free zone companies meeting certain conditions maintain 0% corporate tax. VAT of 5% applies to most goods and services. No capital gains tax for individuals. No wealth tax. No inheritance tax (though Sharia law applies to Muslim expats' estates unless a DIFC will is registered). Excise tax on tobacco (100%), energy drinks (100%), carbonated drinks (50%), and sweetened drinks (50%). Note: Always consult a qualified tax advisor for your specific situation.
Healthcare
COUNTRY FILEHealth insurance is mandatory in Abu Dhabi and Dubai — employers must provide coverage for employees. Private healthcare quality is excellent, with world-class hospitals including Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Mediclinic, and American Hospital Dubai. Insurance plans range from basic (AED 5,000-10,000/year) to comprehensive (AED 15,000-40,000/year). The DHA (Dubai Health Authority) and HAAD (Abu Dhabi) regulate the sector. Out-of-pocket costs are manageable with insurance. Dental care is good but expensive without coverage. Mental health services are improving but still limited compared to Western countries.
No national health cover yet? SafetyWing insures remote workers in 180+ countries from about $45/month — month to month, cancel anytime. A sensible bridge until you enter a national system.
Check SafetyWingBanking
COUNTRY FILEEmirates NBD and ADCB (Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank) are the most popular with expats. Account opening is straightforward with a residence visa: passport, Emirates ID, visa, salary certificate or freelance license. Many banks offer zero-balance salary accounts. ENBD's Liv. digital bank and Mashreq Neo are popular digital-first options. UAE banking is modern with excellent mobile apps. International transfers can be done through banks or exchange houses (Al Ansari Exchange is the largest). Wise works well for incoming transfers. Cryptocurrency is regulated — licensed exchanges operate in ADGM and DIFC free zones.
Paid in one currency, where rent is in another? Wise moves money at the real exchange rate with low, transparent fees — the account we open first for every relocating client.
