How to use it

GUIDE
Enter the salary you are being offered or are earning now, pick the city you are in, and the calculator translates that pay into each other city in the dataset. The verb on the page is deliberate: it shows what the same money buys, not what you should negotiate. Use it before an offer lands, so you walk into the call knowing whether $2,400 in Berlin is a good number or a cost-of-living cut.

What the numbers mean

METHOD

The calculator takes one salary and reprices it through each city's cost structure using the same three-tier estimates as the cost-of-living tool — it is a purchasing-power lens, not a PPP index, and not a tax calculator. A salary that is fine after rent in one city can be a savings-negative number in another before you ever touch a tax office, and this tool surfaces that gap before the contract does.

Worked example: a $2,400/month salary is mid-market in Berlin (comfortable tier roughly $2,170/month) but buys a comfortable lifestyle plus meaningful savings in a $750–$900 month city like Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City. Same dollars, completely different financial shape — which is the entire point of running the numbers before signing.

Common questions

FAQ

Does the salary calculator account for taxes?

No — it stops at purchasing power. Tax is a separate layer: use the tax estimator for income-tax direction, then remember social contributions often exceed income tax for employees. Two cities with identical gross pay can differ hugely after both layers.

Is this an official purchasing-power index?

It is our own planning model, built on the same reviewed cost estimates as the rest of the site. It is directionally correct and deliberately transparent about assumptions — use it to challenge an offer, then verify the specific numbers for your situation.

What is a 'good' remote salary, then?

Our test for clients: after the comfortable tier plus taxes, you should still be saving at least 10–15% of gross every month. If the salary in front of you fails that test in the city you want, the tool shows you where the shortfall actually comes from.
