Banking
FORM TPE-03CTBC Bank, E.SUN Bank, and Cathay United Bank are popular with foreigners. ARC (Alien Resident Certificate) is required for full banking services — issued upon visa approval. Opening an account requires: ARC, passport, initial deposit (typically NT$1,000), and a Taiwan phone number. LINE Bank (digital bank) is increasingly popular and available to ARC holders. Taiwan's banking technology is good but not as advanced as some Asian neighbors. ATMs are everywhere (7-Eleven has them in every store). International wire transfers through Taiwanese banks can be slow — Wise offers better rates and speed. Monthly salary transfers are the standard way to receive payments from employers.
Moving money across borders? Wise converts at the mid-market rate with fees of roughly 0.3–1% — the tool we set our own clients up with before anything else.
Open WiseTaxes
FORM TPE-04Errors in tax filing can result in significant penalties. Progressive income tax from 5% to 40% for tax residents (183+ days). GOLD CARD BENEFIT: First-time tax residents with a Gold Card who earn over NT$3 million/year can deduct 50% of the portion exceeding NT$3 million from taxable income for the first 3 years — effectively halving the tax rate on higher earnings. Non-permanent residents (first 183 days of first year) are only taxed on Taiwan-source income. Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) contribution is approximately 5.17% of salary. Business income is taxed at 20% corporate tax rate with a 5% surtax on undistributed earnings.
Visas & residency
FORM TPE-05Important: Visa regulations change frequently. Always verify current requirements with the official embassy or consulate before making plans. This guide provides general information as of 2026. Taiwan's Gold Card is the premier visa for professionals and digital nomads: 1-3 year open work permit issued to those with expertise in specific fields (technology, arts, education, finance, etc.) or earning NT$160,000+/month (~$5,000). No employer sponsorship needed, includes work rights, and comes with tax incentives. Employment permits are available through employer sponsorship. Tourist visa-free entry allows 90 days for most nationalities. Hong Kong/Macau residents have special pathways. The APRC (Alien Permanent Resident Certificate) is available after 5 continuous years of residence.
Healthcare
FORM TPE-06Understanding the healthcare system is crucial for any expat — it affects your daily peace of mind, your budget, and your visa eligibility. Here's a comprehensive guide based on real advisory experience. Taiwan's National Health Insurance (全民健康保險, NHI) is consistently ranked among the world's best healthcare systems. Coverage is comprehensive: doctor visits, hospitalization, surgery, prescriptions, dental, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and mental health — all for approximately NT$750-1,500/month ($24-48). Co-payments are minimal: NT$50-420 per outpatient visit, NT$150-1,400 per day for hospitalization. Wait times are short — you can often see a specialist the same day. Quality is excellent: modern facilities, well-trained doctors, and many English-speaking physicians in Taipei. NHI eligibility begins after 6 months of continuous residence (Gold Card holders enroll immediately).
