TRANSFER METHOD

Compare the full cost of a transfer

For the same payer budget, compare the final proceeds. Then check whether the quote can meet the bill and its deadline.

Compare what leaves one account with what reaches the other

For the same total amount you pay, compare the recipient's proceeds after any charges outside the quote. A low advertised fee or favourable-looking rate alone cannot answer that question.

Match the sending and receiving currencies, destination, payment method, recipient method and quote time. Include sender-bank or card funding charges in the total debit. Check whether receiving-bank or intermediary deductions are already included in the quoted recipient amount.

Compare two actual quotes

The calculator uses your figures. It does not retrieve prices, verify a provider, execute a transfer or decide which account you can open.

Collect a quote record that can be compared

What to obtain for both quotes
RecordQuestion to resolve
Total payer debitWhat is the whole amount leaving the sender, including the provider fee and the funding method's charges?
Recipient amountIs this the final amount available to the recipient or an amount before deductions?
Extra receiving chargesAre they confirmed absent/already included, known separately, or still unknown? Record the charging currency.
Funding and delivery methodIs each quote for the same bank transfer, card funding or other method, and the same recipient route?
Quote time and expiryWhen was the quote obtained, and what deadline or conditions apply to a rate lock?
Availability and deliveryAre your origin, destination, account type and amount eligible? What funding cutoff and estimated delivery apply?

A quote with a new-customer promotion should record its conditions and expiry. Do not compare it with another provider's ordinary price as if the promotion remains available for every future payment.

Worked comparison: the zero-fee quote still has a cost

All quotes and rates below are fictional USD-to-EUR teaching inputs. They are not prices from any provider. Both payers spend exactly 2,000 USD. For illustrating the arithmetic only, the comparison reference is 0.92 EUR per USD.

Two fictional offers for the same payer budget
FigureQuote AQuote B
Total debit from payer2,000 USD2,000 USD
Provider fee within that debit20 USD0 USD
Amount converted1,980 USD2,000 USD
Quoted conversion rate0.900 EUR/USD0.905 EUR/USD
Quoted recipient amount1,782 EUR1,810 EUR
Extra receiving deduction, not included above0 EUR, confirmed for this case5 EUR, confirmed for this case
Net recipient proceeds1,782 EUR1,805 EUR
Effective rate on total debit0.891 EUR/USD0.9025 EUR/USD

Quote B's additional proceeds = 1,810 − 5 − 1,782 = 23 EUR

To reproduce the result in the tool, use USD and EUR, total payment 2,000 for both quotes, recipient amounts 1,782 and 1,810, and mark B's extra deduction as known at 5. Mark A's deductions as none/already included. Optional reference rate: 0.92.

The 20 USD fee in A is already inside its total payment and recipient quote. Do not deduct another 20 USD from the 1,782 EUR. Likewise, if B's quoted recipient amount were already the net 1,805, enter 1,805 with the deduction marked already included. Entering 1,805 and subtracting the same 5 again would wrongly produce 1,800.

Use a reference as a benchmark, not a promised price

At the invented 0.92 reference, 2,000 USD corresponds to 1,840 EUR. A delivers 58 EUR less; B delivers 35 EUR less. Expressed back in USD at that reference:

Cost against reference = total payer debit − net recipient proceeds ÷ reference rate

Benchmark calculation for the fictional quotes
MeasureQuote AQuote B
Gap in recipient currency1,840 − 1,782 = 58 EUR1,840 − 1,805 = 35 EUR
Equivalent gap in payer currency58 ÷ 0.92 = 63.04 USD35 ÷ 0.92 = 38.04 USD
Gap as percentage of the reference proceeds58 ÷ 1,840 × 100 = 3.152%35 ÷ 1,840 × 100 = 1.902%

These gaps combine the stated fee, the difference from the reference and extra recipient deductions. They are not an additional bill to add to the total debit. In A, the 58 EUR gap can be checked as 20 × 0.92 = 18.40 for the fee's reference value, plus 1,980 × (0.92 − 0.90) = 39.60 for the rate difference.

If using the ECB's reference rates, note the direction: its table quotes other currencies against one euro. A USD-to-EUR reference therefore requires the reciprocal of the EUR-to-USD figure. The ECB publishes these rates for information and discourages using them for transactions. A benchmark may also be recorded at a different time from your quote. Without a suitable reference, compare net proceeds and leave benchmark cost blank.

Find the receiving charge that changes the answer

If B's extra receiving deduction is unknown, call it D. Its net proceeds are 1,810 − D. A remains 1,782 under the stated case.

Tie point: 1,810 − D = 1,782, so D = 28 EUR

B provides more only if D is below 28 EUR; it ties at 28 and provides less above 28. At the known 5 deduction, the advantage is 23. An unchecked deduction cannot be silently replaced by zero. Mark it unknown in the tool and treat the comparison as provisional until the provider or recipient bank supplies the needed information.

If a charge is taken separately from the sender in USD, add it to the total payer debit rather than entering it as a EUR recipient deduction. If that makes the two total debits different, obtain fresh quotes for a common total.

Different total payments answer a different question

Suppose B instead asks for 2,010 USD and quotes 1,819.05 EUR before the same 5 deduction. Its 1,814.05 net exceeds A by 32.05 EUR, but the payer spent an extra 10 USD. That difference is not a saving for the same 2,000 USD budget.

Do not simply scale the quote down: fixed charges, volume tiers and promotions can make prices non-proportional. Use the calculator's common-budget quote request, or ask both providers the same question:

For a total debit of 2,000 USD including all sender and funding charges, what amount reaches this EUR account, using this funding and delivery method? Identify any excluded charges, quote expiry and delivery estimate.

For a fixed bill instead, reverse the question. If rent must receive exactly 1,800 EUR, A's 1,782 is short by 18; B's 1,805 covers the amount under the example assumptions. Ask each provider for a current quote that delivers the required net amount and compare the full payer debits. The tool does not extrapolate a fixed-target offer from a fixed-budget quote.

A monetary advantage does not establish timely delivery

Suppose the housing payment must arrive on Monday 2 November 2026 and you obtain quotes on Friday 30 October. “One business day” needs the provider's actual cutoff, funding method, destination calendar and any verification conditions. A rate lock is not a delivery guarantee. Do not derive a guaranteed arrival date by subtracting a weekend yourself.

Record the money leaving the sending account and becoming usable for the bill on the relevant dates in your cash-flow plan. For a single-currency plan, use the actual amount required to obtain that currency and avoid also counting the transferred principal as a separate household expense. If your money remains split between currencies or inaccessible accounts, a combined total can hide a shortfall in the account that must make the payment.

Check destination eligibility, limits, identification requirements, provider authorisation and cancellation conditions directly. This arithmetic cannot establish a provider's safety or suitability.

Sources, method and commercial boundary

ExpatTools created and independently recalculated the examples, the fee tie point and the fixed-budget comparison. Calculations use unrounded inputs; displayed USD and EUR money is rounded to two decimals. The fictional reference has no claim to represent a market rate.

Primary sources checked 7 October 2026. They do not verify any provider quote, fee waiver or delivery estimate.
