Why this table exists

The table scores all 33 dossiers on cost, infrastructure, community and liveability — the four things that decide whether a city works as a base, not just a postcard.
How to read it
METHODThe score is our own composite judgement out of 10, stated as a judgement rather than dressed up as science, and it is two pieces of information in one: the score itself, and the cost next to it. Singapore tops the list at 8.6 with a $3,500/month tier; Chiang Mai sits at 8.0 on $800 — two cities at the opposite ends of the cost axis, both genuinely excellent for different people. Use the score to shortlist and the cost column to split it.
Top of the table, explained
NOTESSingapore leads on a combination nobody else matches — safety 9.8, infrastructure that simply works, and a community dense enough that the salary premium is defensible if you earn in dollars or euros. Lisbon's 8.5 is the Europe pick, and the one datum that explains most Lisbon debates on the internet: the city is expensive for Portugal but still cheap by western-European salary norms, which is why the verdict on the dossier says the 2019 bargain is gone — while staying magnetic. Amsterdam's 8.4 is the 'everything works' pick, and the value discoveries start at Prague's 8.2 on $1,300 and Valencia's 8.1 on $1,600, where the composite is strong at a mid-table price. The cheapest top-fifteen entry, Chiang Mai at 8.0, is the reminder that 'best' and 'cheapest' are answers to different questions.

Four weighted inputs — cost, infrastructure, community, liveability — informed by the dossier data, index data where it helps, and our own client and field experience. The method is intentionally human: we score, and we say so, rather than pretending a single index number is objective truth.
Why is the most expensive city on the site ranked #1?
Because the score rewards the whole package, and Singapore's infrastructure, safety and community genuinely clear the bar. The cost column is right there next to the score precisely so 'best' never silently means 'best value' — for most readers it will not be the right row to act on.
Which of these actually gives visa security for remote workers?
Check the country file under each city — the score weights liveability, not immigration ease. Singapore's Employment Pass needs a real employer, for example, while Barcelona's digital nomad visa is a documented route. The visa comparator is the right second step after you shortlist.
